UFC 62 Tonight! ; Liddell vs. Sobral, Griffin vs. Bonnar

Tonight is UFC 62, with a main event of "The Ice Man" Chuck Liddell defending the UFC Lightheavyweight Title against Babalu Sobral. The other big selling point of the PPV is the rematch of Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar.

I have Liddell winnig via KO. Sobral could win if he's able to take the fight to the ground though.

I also have Griffin winning and afterwards, he should get another shot at Tito or perhaps a title shot. Their first match, on Spike TV is remembered as one of the (if not the #1) best UFC fights ever.

The undercard of the show is pretty lackluster.

You got to walk me through the rules...what's legal as far as submission holds?...kicks? ...and punches?...what's a foul in this sport?...

I'm going to change the subject, did anyone here see The Travers and do you think that Bernardini is the next Superhorse? If Barbaro didn't get Injured these two would have really been something, sort of like Affirmed and Alydar. Oh!! what could have been.

Here are the rules mandated by the State Athletic Commissions and UFC...

"Commission approved gloves
Weight classes
Time limits and rounds
Mandatory drug testing
No head butting or kicking to the downed opponent
No knees to the head of a downed opponent
No downward point of the elbow strikes
No strikes to the spine or the back of the head
No groin or throat strikes
State Athletic Commission approval in such major states as New Jersey, Nevada, Florida & Louisiana."

Here's a definition on Mixed Martial Arts: "Mixed martial arts (MMA) is an intense and evolving combat sport in which competitors use interdisciplinary forms of fighting that include jiu-jitsu, judo, karate, boxing, kickboxing, wrestling and others to their strategic and tactical advantage in a supervised match. Scoring for mixed martial arts events in Nevada, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Florida is based on athletic-commission approved definitions and rules for striking (blows with the hands, feet, knees or elbows) and grappling (submission, choke holds, throws or takedowns). No single discipline reigns. "

Well, a lackluster card and everything went according to predictions.

Griffin defeated Bonnar by decision and Liddell successfully retained his Championship by defeating Sobral by referee stoppage.

Cool, I thought I was going to have to wait until Thur. to even hear about it. Can't wait for Oct 10 for Ortiz/Shamrock III on Spike TV. Finally, it will be decided!

Liddell will probably have the belt for a long time unless Silva takes but you got to admit he has owned the best UFC can throw at him for awhile(Coture, Ortiz, Belfort, Horn, and Babalu).

What was Babalu thinking running in on Chuck, thats asking to get KO'ed.
Next on his list is Silva then a rematch with Ortiz I am thinking.

I wished they would have been a decisive victory by Forrest or Bonnar. Maybe a pt.3 is coming up. Hope that would be on Spike TV.

Really looking foreward to the BJ Penn and Matt Houghes fight at ufc 63.

It is hard for UFC to put together Main Events cause the fighters are so dominate. Most of the good fights are the undercards.

The Wanderlei Silva match with Liddell isn't going to happen. Dana White said so in an interview a couple of weeks back or so. It's likely because he couldn't come to any business agreements with Pride.

I don't know why he would announce it on PPV and then not come through with it.

What???? I was on ufc site saturday night and it was still up.
Went to it now and it is gone. What a bummer.

Maybe they cant have 2 champs fighting because that would consolidate the title?

Well Empire I went to the MMA message board and nothing on it. Heard it first here.

The card had GSP v/s Hughes and he got hurt so they got B.J Penn in it now. So it is subject to change.
I would rather see Penn anyway.

You hear anything about why it was canceled or just contract problems.
I know Silva is wanting to fight in the UFC he was there alot and Coture called him in the Octogon and nothing ever materialized.

Here's a link to a MMAWeekly.com story from a couple weeks ago.

As far as a forum here at GTG, we need to get more MMA discussion before we get our own dedicated forum

Re: UFC 62 Tonight! ; Liddell vs. Sobral, Griffin vs. Bonnar

i could care less about ortiz and shamrock and wat ever catch phrase they give me" now it will be decided' or watever it is. this is trash i dont want to see a guy in his prime beating a guys face in who belongs in a wheel cheer doesnt do it for me rather watch two up and coming guys then this.

I have become a big fan of gsp and it sucks that he got his rematch after beating Penn, and now this. But i guess the good thing is i wont have to see hughes with the belt anymore i could get use to that.

Liddell Ortiz will be a good fight, its sad to say but dana white might want ortiz to win cause the rematch will draw better then anyone else he can get to fight lidell.

O ya Matt Syra(sp?) they guy that basically coached shonie carter to victory on the season opener of TUF, does anyone know anything about him. HE seems to know alot but how does he fight?

lol, I sorta agree with you mervin but part of me still wants to see Shamrock attempt to fight.

He probably has no business in the octagon anymore but nonetheless, with the hatred between the two, it should be interesting. On Free TV no less (who would plunk down $30-$40 for it again?!), hopefully it lasts longer than their last go around
