WWE reups with USA Network

World Wrestling Entertainment's "WWE Monday Night RAW" will remain on USA Network through 2010, extending the current contract by two years, it was announced today by NBC Universal. In addition to RAW on USA, WWE will continue to provide NBC with special programming twice a year for the late night Saturday time slot. -- World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc.

It says they've been averaging over five million viewers per week. Anyone know how that compares to what they did on Spike?

RAW was on TNN/Spike from 2000-2005. I don't have/couldn't find any concrete numbers from back then as far as complete viewers. However, early in that time, the TV ratings were good (6's and 5's). Over the years they settled down into the 4's and 3's. Today, on USA, ratings for RAW are in the mid 3's. Not sure how that translates into total viewers though.

I'd think there were more viewers from 2000-2002 then anytime recently. But Spike or USA doesn't have a real role in that. Just a matter of (at the time) the 2nd big company was closing its doors and most of those fans tuned ove to WWF/WWE in 2001. Then they pretty much stopped watching since.

Just an interesting point to ponder...during the height of the wrestling wars of the 1990s, circa 1998-1999, between the Monday shows on TNT and USA, there were over 10 Million viewers watching wrestling on one night. And think less than a decade since, half that number is what's watching now.

The actual wrestling was better, too. Hardly any of these guys do any actual wrestling holds anymore.

Yeah. If they do they have it tweaked just slightly for their persona. Angle was/is a hell of a technical wrestler. So was Benoit before he went psycho.

I think wrestling has a "fad period" every so often and then simply it gets too silly one way or another and then people seem to snap out of it and realize they're spending 4 hours a week watching a silly soap opera filled with 400 pound Samoan guys break dancing, midgets dressed as leprechauns running around, third rate strippers and a whole lot of fake fighting.

Re: WWE reups with USA Network

I have been a wrestling fan since i was a kid, and still am today ( i know its lame) but some of the promos (skits)they have are ridiculous. They have carlito run into a brick wall, because he saw a midget do it. i hope once shane takes over the buisnees, he will put it in a diffrent direction.

lol, I couldn't believe it when I saw that segment.

I wouldn't count too much on Shane. From the way things look, he won't be taking over the actual booking, but the business side of things. Hunter/Stephanie are more in control of writing and whatnot.

Oh, that was just a one-shot thing, I'm sure. Both Bradshaw and Simmons are pretty much retired.
