Riddick Bowe Will Try MMA

Former world heavyweight champion boxer (42-1-1) Riddick Bowe has had a strange road over the past seven, eight years. In 2004 he made his return to the boxing ring after a seven year break (which included a stint in prison for kidnapping). He defeated Marcus Rhode and then in 2005, defeated Billy Zumbrun.

Now, after declaring bankruptcy, Rowe will turn to mixed martial arts. He has signed an exclusive fight deal with Xcess Entertainment. His first fight is scheduled for December 12th. No opponent has been named yet.

Of course this has that sideshow/freakshow feel to it. Depending on who they choose to fight him, he'll have to contend with a guy who (should have at least) a good knowledge of the ground game. Whether it be brazilian jiu-jitsu or wrestling, can Rowe compete with that?

Bowe lost only one pro fight?...wow, didn't realize that...I think a good boxer always has the edge...mostly cause to grapple you got to get close enough to do it.

A good pro boxer must have some sort of takedown defense or he stands no chance. Especially in today's day and age where MMA fighters are trained in many styles, a boxer needs to learn other things if he wants to survive.

Re: Riddick Bowe Will Try MMA

It depends on the fighter. But in MMA, you can't only know boxing. A guy like Chuck Liddell (during his amazing run) had great standup and amazing take down defense. The fight against Tito Ortiz in December 06, Tito tried for three rounds to take him down but couldn't do it. They traded punches and eventually Liddell hammered him for the TKO.

Bowe will need to learn how to protect against the takedowns. He can't rely on his standup alone.
