Babalu Won't Let Go After Heath Taps Out

Here's the footage from Saturday night's UFC 74 Pay-Per-View of Renato "Babalu" Sobral choking out a bloodied David Heath (who completely passes out as a result) after he'd already tapped out.The fallout's already palpable, at least for Babalu. UFC pres Dana White says Babalu has already been fined half his purse by the state Athletic Commission. It's easy for them to get sanctimonious right now. Let's see how outraged everyone is when this video goes viral and people pay to see Babalu fight the next time.

Heres the video:Video Renato Babalu Sobral vs David Heath UFC 74 - UFC, 74, Renato, Babalu, tyson - Dailymotion Share Your Videos

Re: Babalu Won't Let Go After Heath Taps Out

What rubs people the wrong way about this is it gives the sport bad PR and follows the stigma that some (uneducated) people have about MMA.

I didn't see it but Babalu said he was "teaching him a lesson." Supposedly Heath may have worn a t-shirt that contained Babalu's mugshot on it (I heard this, didn't actually see it) and it pissed him off.

Still, after the guy taps out and you keep the hold on for several moments afterwards, that's uncalled for. Glad half of his purse won't be paid to him.

Do you think he should be banned from the ufc? I mean yeah it can get intense at times and accidents happen but he blatantly broke a big rule..

Banned? I don't think he deserves a punishment that severe. This is the man's livelihood (and although there are other places, this is the biggest organization).

If it was a case of him severely injuring David Heath, you can bet that State Athletic Commission would have suspended him at the very least.

Also, let it be known that the Vegas crowd boo'd him out of the building after the finish to the fight. It's been said his fighting peers were none to pleased with his actions either.

Re: Babalu Won't Let Go After Heath Taps Out

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer reports the following:

Quote:
--The Nevada State Athletic Commission will be meeting Friday morning to decide the fate of Renato Sobral, based on him holding the choke too long after the tap in Saturday's match with David Heath. The commission at this point has withheld $25,000 from Sobral from his $50,000 purse.
I wonder what that means..."decide the fate"...

I doubt anything happens to him. I would equate this with boxing when a boxer hits an opponent after the bell rings for the round. It is just them sending a message.

On a side note... Why did the ref let the fight go that long. He lost a lot of blood.

Sobral has been released from the UFC.

As far as the fight, there are doctor's at ringside who I'm sure were checking on Heath as far as blood loss. If he couldn't continue defending himself, they would have stopped the fight.

Wow, they are a lot more strict than boxing. I guess they have to be with the image most of the public has of them.
