| Re: Ask The Experts...MMA Yep, many. Of course it changes based on where the fight is being held. Let's focus on the USA...headbutts, eye gouging, kicks/punches to the back of the head, holding the ropes/cage, scratching, and according to wikipedia, "Small joint manipulation" are not allowed. Other such rules, no striking the throat, striking with the point of the elbow downward. In the States, MMA is regulated (at least in some states) while in Europe and Japan, it's not. In Japan, soccer kicks are allowed while in the U.S., they're not. In the UFC, stomping a downed opponent is not allowed. |

In the sense there's amateur boxing and then prize fighting...once you're in MMA, you're a pro. |

| Re: Ask The Experts...MMA Hey Simon, is the sky blue up there in Maine? As for the weight classes, it depends on the promotion. UFC's biggest weight class is heavyweight (up to 265 lbs). Any promotion in a US state where MMA is sanctioned and governmed by an athletic commission will likely be around that same watermark. In Nevada though, there is a Super Heavyweight (no limit) but isn't used often. Overseas there are no real governing bodies so a guy like Butter Bean can compete there. Pride had no weight limit for heavyweights which is how Butterbean competed there. |
