News today from the California State Athletic Commission says UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk and his UFC 73 opponent Hermes Franca have both tested positive for steroids.

UFCJunkie.com reports the response from the CSAC with word of punishments for each fighter. Both can appeal (word is Sherk will, but Franca has admitted it) their suspensions and the failed drug tests.

Sean Sherk, the reigning UFC World Lightweight Champion, who last competed on July 7, 2007 in Sacramento, has tested positive for Nandrolone Metabolite. He has been fined $2,500. His suspension period runs from the conclusion of his bout on July 7, 2007 through the remainder of his licensing year which is June 26, 2008. Furthermore, he has been assessed an additional 10 days in order to fulfill the terms of his suspension (365 total days). The additional days will be added at the beginning of his next licensing year when he reapplies.

It's assumed Sherk will be stripped of the UFC lightweight title.

i guess thats the draw back of being involved in a sport that, to be at the very best, you have to have incredible strength. i mean we see it all over the place from football to baseball to even the gameshow 'Gladiators' (or American Gladiators).

as long as there are sports out there to compete in and succeed in, there will always be people looking for that extra 'illegal' push, to get them ahead, which is a shame but at times understandable
