Re: World Series trivia

What pitcher has the lowest career World Series ERA while tossing a minimum of 100 innings?

Re: World Series trivia

Christy Mathewson. I just finished reading a book about him. He loved to gamble, but never ever bet on baseball, which wasn't even that frowned upon back then. He could play chaeckers against six people at once and beat them all. Above all, he was perhaps the greatest sportsman the game has ever seen, with never a bad word about anyone.

Yep, and good background stuff, legend. Figures I'd hit a question on a guy you just finished reading up on.

Re: World Series trivia

Who was the next scheduled batter when Bill Mazeroski hit his game winning home run to win the 1961 World Series?

Game 7 of the 1960 World Series, you mean? If I'm not mistaken, it was Dick Stuart. In fact, I found this quote from him about it: "I was kneeling in the on-deck circle (when Bill Mazeroski hit his dramatic 1960 World Series home run), thinking I was going to be the hero. And all of a sudden, I was out on the field jumping around."

Re: World Series trivia

Harvey Haddix was scheduled to bat, and Stuart was going to pinch-hit for him.

My favorite team, but a little before my time I'm afraid. I recalled seeing a special on the team earlier this year on FSN Pittsburgh, but had to look it up to double check. Speaking of the Pirates, in the 1903 World Series, they had one pitcher toss five complete games. Who was it?

Yep - won the first game in Series history and took the next two before his arm just gave out. His five decisions are still a single-Series record.

Re: World Series trivia

Whose diving somersault catch kept Bill Bevins no-hitter alive in the fourth game of the 1947 World Series? Bevens lost the game and the no-hitter in the ninth with two outs. I read this in a book when I was a kid and never forgot it.
