NL Tie Breaker Scenarios

It's officially the last day of the MLB regular season. However, there is a chance 162 games may not be enough to determine who goes to the playoffs representing the National League. The Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks are already in as their respective division winners. The only spots available are the NL East division champion and the NL wild card representative.

The teams still in the running include Colorado Rockies, San Diego Padres, New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies.

If Mets, Phillies, Rockies and Padres all finish with same record, 89-73
-The Mets play the Phillies in Philadelphia on Monday to determine NL East Champ
-The loser moves into a mini-tournament to determine NL Wild Card. The Colorado Rockies would choose from playing 1 road game (choice A) or 2 home games (choice B) on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Choice A
-The Mets play the Padres in New York on Tuesday
-The winner plays at Colorado versus the Rockies to determine NL Wild Card

Choice B
-The Mets play at Colorado or the Padres play at Colorado
-If the Mets win, they play at Shea vs. San Diego to determine NL Wildcard
-If the Padres win, they play at Shea vs. Mets to determine NL Wildcard
-If Colorado wins game 1, they play the other team at Colorado to determine NL Wildcard

If the Mets, Phillies, Padres finish with the same record
-The Mets play in Philly Monday to determine the NL East Champion
-The loser would play the Padres to determine NL Wild Card (Padres @ NYM or Philly @ Padres)

If the Rockies and Padres finish with the same record
-The Padres play in Colorado Monday to determine NL Wild card

Hope that wasn't too confusing lol

Thanks to ESPN's Jayson Stark for explaining some of the details

Re: NL Tie Breaker Scenarios

Man, I kind of hope they all win today. I'd love to see this "mini-playoff" come about! Ha ha!

Re: NL Tie Breaker Scenarios

Well, only one tiebreaker is needed this year. The Rockies and Padres have tied for the wild card and will play a one-game playoff to determine who advances.
