In 2001 John Wiley became UW chancellor and faced his first public task. He had to deal with fallout from the infamous scandal The Shoebox. He said it was embarrassing to be grilled by NCAA investigators.
The school was put on probabtion for 5 years and other sanctions were added, all coming from extra benefits received by UW student-athletes at a retail shoe store outlet in nearby Black Earth.
As Wiley steps down, he takes pride in the fact that the school has not run afoul of NCAA since then.
The seven year stretch of no major rules violations at UW is one of the longest among Big Ten conference schools.
