| 2008 Wisconsin Football Preview OFFENSE The big thing in the offense is there is no clear cut favorite for quarterback. The two front runners for the position are 5th year senior Allan Evridge from Kansas State and Dustin Sherer, a junior with 3 career pass attempts. They have a good offensive line with four repeating starters led by senior RG Draig Urbik. RB PJ Hill and TE Travis Beckum are two of the offense's biggest weapons. Hill had 29 TDs, 2781 yards in 544 carries last year. Beckum fully plans on being the Badgers leading receiver for the second straight season. He is 67 receptions short of the school record for most receptions. Wisconsin will mostly run the ball, but sophomores WR Kyle Jefferson and David Gilreath should make a difference in close games. Gilreath has potential breakout speed. DEFENSE Veterans on the D line headed by DE Matt Shaughnessy, the team's defensive MVP in 2007, returns three starters. Junior college transfer Dan Moore adds depth inside and outside. Linebacking corps will add strength with the team's leading tackler senior captain Jonathan Casillas who will be joined again by Elijah Hodges and De Andre Levy. Coach Bielema hopes these three will limit miscues against the opposition's rushing attack. Corners are the big question. Allen Langford and Aaron Henry are coming off injuries and Jay Valai will be SS despite his troubles with long coverage. That leaves FS Shane Carter-conference leader in interceptions last year- the only sure thing in the Badgers' secondary. SPECIAL TEAMS Two unknown freshmen, Brad Nortman and Philip Welch step in as punter and placekicker. The kicking game will be a continuing problem. WR David Gilreath will be KR specialist. He set school records for kickoff return yards in a season (967) and in a game (189) in 2007 and averaged 14.0 yards per punt return to lead the Big 10. He will be a threat to find the end zone in any punt or kick situation. OVERALL Coach Bielema is 21-5 in his first two years as head coach and has raised expectations in Madison. Badgers non conference schedule is somewhat favorable except when they travel to Fresno State to take on the Bulldogs. Conference heavy weights Ohio State and Penn State visit Camp Randall on back to back evenings in October. The most challenging conference away will be in Lansing, Michigan to take on the Spartans. KEYS TO 2008 SEASON The play of an inexperienced quarterback, the performance of a somewhat porous secondary, and efficiency in an improved kicking game. After an injury plagued spring, Wisconsin will need to stay healthy if it hopes to repeat or even improve on last year's 9 win season. WNUR Sports » 2008 Wisconsin Football Preview There it is. The preview for the Wisconsin Badgers. Does anyone besides me think maybe that a repeat of the 9 win season is highly unlikely?
