Its been hard to judge the progress of the defense, which had had up to 8 starters out with injuries.
It hasn't been ideal, either, for a defense hungry to make up for its subpar 2007 performance.
The Badgers had one of the best defenses in 2006, ranking 1st in passing efficiency defense and 2nd in passing yards and scoring.
Last year's defense struggled to replace 5 starters, dealt with injuries and inconsistent play at strong safety and middle linebacker. It surrendered 30 or more points 6 times.
They never played to their potential and its new defensive coordinator Dave Doeren's job to change that. He has targeted 2 areas this spring: pursuing to the ball and conditioning.
