WVU Mountaineers: BCS Title Contenders?

Are the West Virginia Mountaineers BCS title contenders? Street & Smiths seems to think so, ranking them #2 in their 2006 preseason Top 25. Quoting the magazine here: "You need four things to win the national championship: talent, coaching, the right schedule and luck. The Mountaineers have the first three. With QB Pat White running Rich Rodriguez's point-a-minute offense and running back Steve Slaton around to gain the tough yards, West Virginia could be unbeaten come January." What do you think?

Me too. Rodriguez is a great coach (hope WVU can keep him around) and Slaton's the real deal. They at least make a BCS bowl.

You have too like anyone's chances to at least make a BCS title game with only one or two potential losses on the schedule. Louisville will be a difficult hurdle, but other than The Cardinals, the assumption is every game will be smooth sailing.

The relatively easy schedule is certainly a factor. They're a good team, though, and they definitely have a better than fair shot of running the table in 2006. That could be good enough to net them a trip to the title game, with a little luck that is.

Re: WVU Mountaineers: BCS Title Contenders?

word going around the town has been pat white gained some passing ability from camps this summer im curious to see him progress, shicano from rutgers has been quoted to saying things to the effect that pat white is harder to gamplan then wen he had to make the game planes for ron mexico when he was the def cordinator for miami.

Slaton i just love to watch he reminds me alot of tiki barber and im a big giant fan, he catch he runs, he is tiny and he seeks contact instead of running out of bouds and losing 2 or 3 yards. Yet he can still make you miss wen he wants to

The thing im curious to see the most is r DB's 1 of 5 returning starters. thats not good but rod gets guy who have more hitting ability then coverage so this will be intresting to see

If WV can develope a passing ability along with their ground movement, they could be the best team anywhere. I hate the schedule, its not fair to a team thats as good as WV has become. I think Coach Rod will give our state a winning team again.

remember that the wvu schedule is still scewed because of the big east fall out, in two years they will have there schedule fixed they have added teams like michigan state, auburn, and florida state to the out of conference schdedule over the next 12 years obviously not all 3 during the same season, but they are making it stronger

Lee Corso Pick

Lee Corso on ESPN's College Gameday just picked the Mounaineers to be in the title game. I just don't see it.

On a side note, they were saying the tough game for WV is at Louisville & that one could trip them up.

The kicker... "What *real* title contender would be afraid of going into Papa John Stadium? Nobody, that's who.

Good luck, WVU. You may have a great record but no way I see you making the BCS Championship game.

Re: Lee Corso Pick

We'll see... I heard what Corso said, but don't anyone forget what the Mountaineers did to Georgia last year. Your favorite team could well be the victim for this talented West Virginia offense this time around. Yeah, I'm kinda sticking my neck out here, but I think they have as good a shot as anyone of making the title game.
