Bill Stewart promoted to West Virginia football coach

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Bill Stewart was promoted to head coach of West Virginia, losing the interim tag after the Mountaineers' 48-28 win over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl.

Stewart was to be introduced Thursday at a morning news conference at the team's hotel in Scottsdale, Ariz., athletic department spokesman Mike Fragale told The Associated Press.

Stewart had been the associate head coach under Rich Rodriguez, who left for Michigan last month. Stewart then became the interim coach. Mountaineers quarterback Pat White, who ran for 150 yards and threw for 176 and two touchdowns in the Fiesta Bowl victory over the No. 3 Sooners, began stumping for Stewart on the field after the game.

Good for him. He sure made Bob Stoops look like a lousy coach last night.

Wow, that didn't take long. Glad to see they didn't fool around. He definitely earned the job last night!

Re: Bill Stewart promoted to West Virginia football coach

It was great to see him on the sidelines last night. He was so into it. They said at one point, he even brushed off the governor of West Virginia to go over to his offensive line, who were sitting on the bench resting, to tell them they were doing a great job. That was impressive. And it was great to see how his players treated him after the game. You'd never know he was a couch who didn't know what he'd be doing tomorrow.

On the surface it looks like a good move but part of this staff is leaving to go with Rich so what kind of staff and if they stay with the spread offense it is just like any coaching hire a more wait and see kind of thing guess we will find out next year if it was a good move or not.

That's true from an X's and O's standpoint, but under Stewart yesterday this team showed more heart and fire than they ever did under Rodriguez.

No dout they were pumped last nite and a great game plan and again a team made Bob Stoops look like a second rate Head Coach. But high energy and emotion only will carry one so far lets see if he can recuit as well. not taking anything away from a great win.

Re: Bill Stewart promoted to West Virginia football coach

I know his staff will no doubt change but he showed what it takes to be a head coach. Rod may well regret his Michigan decision but I would like to see them add WVA to thier schedual.

I would love to see them on the schedule. The networks would eat this up.

No, I agree with what your saying. But I'm sure he's not new to the recruiting trail. He was at WVU before Rodriguez even got there, so I'm going to give Stewart the benefit of the down. I'm more interested in learning who will fill out his staff.
