Rodriguez Leaves West Virginia

Breaking news and it's not good for the BCS Bowl bound Mountaineers. Head coach Rich Rodriguez has reportedly informed the team he has accepted the job at Michigan.

"According to the Charleston (W.Va.) Gazette this afternoon, Rodriguez had a 10-minute meeting with his team, told the 11th-ranked Mountaineers that he was leaving for Michigan and went back to his office. The players, according to the paper, had little comment but looked "somber-faced." Also, the country's top quarterback prospect told Superprep.com this afternoon that Rodriguez had called him with similar news.

“I just spoke to Coach Rodriguez about 10 minutes ago and he told me he is going to Michigan,” the QB, Terrelle Pryor, told Superprep.com. “He said they made him an offer he can't refuse.”"

Now where does West Virginia turn? And I doubt Rodriguez will coach them in the bowl game.

Well, he wanted out of Morgantown in the worst way. He gets his wish. Note to WVU - hire somebody who actually WANTS TO BE THERE!

We no Les Miles is stayin at LSU. I think Rodriguez will get his butt kicked at Michigan... it would serve him right.

ESPN thinks he's going to have trouble recruiting nationally. They might be right.

I don't see why it is allowed to hire coaches during the season. Every other sport makes them wiat until the season is completely over. This is not really fair to the mountaineers. They have to go into a bowl game without their coach. At least without him really caring about the game.

Eh, Petrino didn't wait to leave the Falcons. But he gets blasted in the media when behavior like that has become par for the course in the NCAA. It stinks, no doubt about it. Heck, there was a coach last year who switched jobs during the same week he just signed a contract extension. Seems like the word of a college coach isn't worth a hill of beans these days, unless he's a pillar like Joe Paterno.

Petrino had just signed an extension when he left for Atlanta, his replacement at UofL, Kragthorpe had just signed an extension when he left for UofL.

Well, all of a sudden Saban doesn't look so bad. Saban did deny he was leaving Miami until their season was officially over.

Re: Rodriguez Leaves West Virginia

Let him go, he has been trying to leave us for years, he was only after the money. I hope he and his wife like real winters. He may think football is important here (it is) but it is life in the midwest. He better learn how to produce in the big games or that Mercedes might just be a little hard to start on those cold -25 mornings. They play real teams from the start in the midwest.

Here is today's quote from the Ann Arbor Sporting News "I'll be honest, I'm not as excited about this as I thought I'd be but this hire says two things. 1.) Regardless of all the embarrassments that have taken place this year, the Michigan head coach job still matters. I mean, this guy went to West Virginia and he’s leaving to come to Ann Arbor. I think that’s saying something. 2.) Morgantown, West Virginia must be a really boring place to live in. "

Richard (coach Dick) is a great coach, I admit it, and his spread offense was once the big thing for college football. But now everyone has copied his offense and we need something new. We have the talent, we need a good recruiter and someone who knows how to call big plays in big games.

I personally will give him a ride to the airport, though it won't be in a Mercedes.

T.

Welcome to GTG.

Do you have any preferences as far as a new coach goes?

Plus, will this affect Pat White towards heading to the NFL?

Re: Rodriguez Leaves West Virginia

DucS2R's right - since day one, he's been all about the money. Hope his replacement has some passion for WVU football.

I don't think anyone (White, Slaton) tries the NFL route. I worry about Devine transferring to Ann Arbor, though. Not sure why; just a gut feeling.

Re: Rodriguez Leaves West Virginia

Rodriguez leaves a bad taste in my my mouth. A leader's word should be his bond. If my son wanted to play football I would not trust Rodriguez to be his coach . Two coach in the Big East turned down the job and for the good reason that they had committments to stay . I hope the WVU football team looks at this as a Rodriguez weakness and rally to play a great bowl game and move on to a better coach and season next year .
