Re: Skins Offensive Line - Future Hogs?

I want to give Joe Gibbs the benefit of the doubt. The legendary Washington Redskins coach and his staff have long been great at piecing together quality offensive lines. But then you read this -- "Quietly the Redskins have stockpiled a talented group of young centers and guards to take to camp including 7th round draft pick Kili Lefotu from Arizona, free agent guard Jim Jones, a two year vet from Notre Dame who came from Pittsburgh, Mike Pucillo, who started six games for the Browns last season, and Tyson Walter, who came over from the Texans." -- and you wonder, WHO?

Who are these stiffs, and can they come together as the next great offensive line of the Washington Redskins? Or have Gibbs and company finally bitten off more than they can chew?

Re: Skins Offensive Line - Future Hogs?

"The Washington Redskins offensive line has received a lot of props here, or at least the line’s potential has," claims the article. "For the past year the mantra here has been 'they could develop into one of the elite units in the game'. And, a year has come and gone and they have yet to develop into even a very good line, much less one of the best in the business... And so we go into the offseason with almost the same line with the same potential." He also challenges Joe Bugel's coaching. So should Redskins fans be optimistic or pessimistic about the quintet of Chris Samuels, Derrick Dockery, Casey Rabach, Randy Thomas, and Jon Jansen?

Re: Skins Offensive Line - Future Hogs?

Hey Lefty--I think I wrote that article on the "stiffs"---hopefully those guys will be developing more into household names. What I was trying to get at was that the Skins needed to develop some depth behind Samuels, Jansen, Dockery and Randy Thomas. Last year when Thomas went down there was nobody to replace him, and it hurt in the playoffs. This year they will have some guys who can step in and play--watch Lefotu in particular--

Yeah? Cool. Consider Lefotu watched - now, I'm expecting the next Jacoby or Grimm here, so he'd better not let me down!

Re: Skins Offensive Line - Future Hogs?

Okay! Hopefully he will make the team and get a chance to develop in the Skins system. Latest word on the offensive line depth is that Jim Molinaro, third year tackle from Notre Dame who has been getting most of the work behind Chris Samuels at left tackle is going to be out with a knee problem. There has been some buzz about Chris Pino, an undrafted rookie free agent out of San Diego State--apparently Jon Jansen likes him a lot and has said so.

Good article about the Skins O-line in today's Baltimore Sun.

Redskins' offensive line a driving force in win - baltimoresun.com

Washington Redskins coach Joe Gibbs has said several times since the start of training camp that the key to his team's success this season will be found in its offensive line.

Though Gibbs has made similar remarks before during his long career coaching the Redskins, there might even be more truth to the statement this season.

With a 36-year-old quarterback who is injury-prone and much less mobile than he used to be, and with a new offense, the play of the offensive line is crucial to keeping Mark Brunell healthy and the offense productive.

"That's what we want," center Casey Rabach said last week, when the Redskins were 0-2 and coming off a game in which Brunell was sacked six times and intercepted once against the Dallas Cowboys. "We want to be what drives the machine."
Well, they sure looked good this week, that's for sure. How would you rate their performance thus far in 2006?
