Fassell to coach Redskins?

ESPN is reporting that Jim Fassell is expected to join the staff of the Washington Redskins, possibly as head coach. Would that be a good move?

Fassell is good offensive guy who got stuck with the Ravens. I would take him as an offensive coordinator, but not a head coach.

I disagree. He took the Giants to the Super Bowl. He's a good, underrated coach who's gotten an unfairly bad rap.

I was never impressed with him either, but I'm wondering why you think he go an unfair bad rap.

Well, in Baltimore, clearly the problem was Billick, and yet Fassell took the fall for him. Plus I believe the Giants were premature in firing him.

I wasnt thinking about Baltimore at all, but it seems to me that Giants team was a little out of control when he left. When Coughlin took over, he had a rough time getting them disciplined. They used to commit a lot of penalties.

Okay, he's just a little over .500 - but 2 NFC East titles, 3 playoff berths and an NFC Championship in 7 years isn't terrible, right?

Re: Fassell to coach Redskins?

No, its not terrible, but the fact remains he was losing control of his team. They werent going anywhere until that changed.

Re: Fassell to coach Redskins?

I liked Fassel and was sad to see him go in some way (although the Giants were coming off a 4-12 awful season). He's a solid coach who did a lot of good with the team. I blame his promotion of Johnnie Lynn to defensive coordinator who was all about sitting back and reacting instead of being aggressive. Fassel's Giant's teams were routinely undisciplined with the penalties though.

He does deserve a chance to be a head coach again, his record alone gives him that right.

Re: Fassell to coach Redskins?

Well, according to the Washington Times, it's "a matter of when, not if." Fassell WILL be the next Redskins coach.

Hiring of Fassel appears imminent*-*-*The Washington Times, America's Newspaper

Re: Fassell to coach Redskins?

Why not give him another shot. Belichick was a terrible coach when he was with Cleveland, but he learned. Now he is regarded as one of the best. Maybe Fassel could have similar luck.

Cool Re: Fassell to coach Redskins?

For a coach that took his team to the Super Bowl and had a winning record, there must be a reason why Fasselhasn't had a sniff, yet.

What I had heard is that he doesn't interview very well. The Giants hired him because he had been an assistant with them before.

I still don't understand why Greg Williams isn't a shoe-in for the job. But having said that, I think Fassell will do okay if he gets it.
