Re: Maryland WRs head to NFL Two former Terrapin wide receivers have been picked up by NFL teams to head to training camp for a chance of getting a spot on the roster.
Seniors Danny Melendez and Derrick Fenner are attending camps for the Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins, respectively.
Melendez caught 40 passes for 582 yards and two touchdowns during his senior year, his second year as a starter. Fenner, a Hampton, Va. native, is headed to the Redskins camp boasting similar numbers as Melendez, with 34 catches, 417 yards and two touchdowns.
Melendez, a Lancaster, Penn., native, will be leaving this Thursday for training camp where he will be competing for a spot on the team.
“So confident, so excited, ready to get things going,” Melendez said. “It’s another chapter, one chapter is closing ... we’re getting our big opportunity now.”
Daryl Fenner, Derrick’s father, was pleased that his son is going to be close to home, although he noted that growing up they never rooted for the Redskins, or any team in particular.
“It’s exciting to have him on a local team, though,” said Daryl. “We’re looking forward to going out next year looking at him at the games, get the experience and atmosphere.” Call me skeptical...but I don't see these boys making it in the NFL...last great player I remember coming out of Maryland was Randy White... |
