While prosecutors and the league try to find out if Michael Vick was involved in a dog fighting ring at a Virginia house that he owned, one NFL player says it doesn't matter if he did take part.


"I don't know if he was fighting dogs or not, but it's his property, it's his dog," Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis told WAVY-TV in Virginia. "If that's what he wants to do, do it. I think people should mind their business."


When told that dog fighting is a felony, Portis replied, "It can't be too bad of a crime."

Portis comment aside...this is a whole new can of worms...possession/companion it depends on your views and there is no clear universal law of moral conduct in the matter...

I was born in a country where dogs were lucky to have left over scraps to eat...actually we were all lucky to have left over scraps to eat,never mind dogs...try sellnig that argument there...

I personally (though I am very kind to animals) have trouble with say a $700 vet bill, when I know there are people world wide going hungry etc...

I am always of the thought, that a few months in a third world country would clear up our collective perspective on a few issues...but that is neither here nor there...

Having said that, Portis is an idiot...not because of his views on dogs...but by virtue of calling a "felony"...not so bad a crime...

I also have problems with high vet bills. I have family that go overboard with it. My father in law spen about $2500 to have his dogs eyes removed. It had a disease and the eyes were falling out. My grandmother paid thousands of dollars to a canine psychiatrist to find out her dog was schizophrenic. If it were me, both of them would have been put down.

I may be against high vet bills, but I would never be part of a dog fight. Anybody that is part of that is scum. The penalty for doing it should be to be part of a dog fight.

i agree with you here but i think there is more to it then that

there is also the court of public opinion ........ ya know these days you have to be "PC" ......... i think (felony aside) this is just as stupid as Tim Hardaway (not sure if that was his last name or not sorry) saying he hates gay people .... there is no law that says you have to like gay people but in this day and age it's a stupid thing to say

Yeah, but is that right?...why must everything be PC?...screw that...Portis is entitled to his opinion...whatever he thinks a dog is...that's up to him...as long as he doesn't break a law...same with Hardaway who can associate with whom ever he wishes to...being born in a country where you could not speak your mind...I will defend anyone's right to speak their mind within the bounds of the law...PC or not...If we crucify Portis for not being PC...the day will come when it will be our turn...

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Tuesday he was "extremely disappointed and embarrassed" by comments made by Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis about dogfighting, The Washington Post reported.

Goodell, in a written statement, criticized Portis' statements.


"I'm extremely disappointed and embarrassed for Clinton Portis," he said, according to the Post. "This does not reflect the sentiments of the Redskins, the NFL or NFL players."
