DE Blog, Finally - Redskins Insider DE Blog, Finally
Despite what the Redskins might say out loud, there are plenty of people in the building with big concerns about the D Line. The idea that an improved secondary will greatly lift the front four, well, I couldn't find a personnel guy or exec around the league to buy it, or to expect guys like Smoot or Macklin to somehow make the DTs better, but I guess it'll all come out in the wash come the fall anyway.
Knowing how aggressive Gibbs and Snyder are, as I have said before, I don't think they're done. They need help on the line and they are kidding themselves to say otherwise. I hear the same thing from everyone I speak to around the league - the Skins don't have much beyond high motor guys on their line, Griffin is the only person who grades above average and he's been hurt for two years. To expects Daniels and Salave'a and Daniels to find a fountain of youth - and good health - as they near the end of their careers is folly. Big Joe worried much of last year he was being phased out, and how his body would hold up, Daniels and Wynn worried about being cap casualties, and those guys know their prime is in the rear window.
To expect Golston to go from strong showings as a rotation guy to a great every-down player at that most difficult of positions is asking a lot. I think he's a very good prospect and will be a good player in this league but to consider him a lock, well ... Montgomery couldn't crack the lineup most of last year, which is no great slight, and plenty of his teammates think he has an NFL future, but to expect him to give you what Golston gave them last year, again, we'll see. Carter doesn't have the size or acumen to demand double teams, particularly with Daniels on the other side, and this team flat out had problems stopping the run at the point of attack last year and stunk against the pass and generated no pressure on the QB.
