Redskins Clinton Portis Rift

I was listening to a local (SNY) post-game playoff show and Ray Luca said in passing, Clinton Portis may become available because he's hearing there may be some problems in Washington. Another person on the panel said to expect "big" changes in Washington this off-season.

Something to look out for, will Clinton Portis be released or traded (again)?

I'm quite sober but thanks for replying. Do I detect a bit of Redskin allegiance? No offense but I'd be a bit on the highstrung side too if I had Dan Snyder as my favorite team's owner.

Yep, another fine intelligent post from our unregistered members

I could theoretically see Portis getting dealt. He's fragile, and Betts is every bit as good a runner while being more durable. If they can get some good value for Portis and make Betts the starter with Duckett backing him up, they should do it in my opinion.

Totally agreed Lefty. If they can free up some salary, maybe they can add needed help on defense.

I think they would be crazy not to trade him. they have a back that is as good if not better in Betts, and could get a few draft picks for Portis.

Nah. Keep him! Oh and re-sign Brunell to a long term deal. There ya go. Now go lose the NFC East again like good little Redskins.

Re: Redskins Clinton Portis Rift

Clinton Portis has a pretty large contract that makes him nearly impossible to move without inflicting irreparable damage to your cap.

I don't think I could pull the trigger on a deal that would make Ladell Betts my feature back. I think Betts is a very good option to have as a backup, but he isn't in Portis' class. One could make a very strong case that Portis is a top five back in the NFL. He has excellent vision, tremendous change-of-direction abilities, adequate power for his size, a suitable extra gear, and a dangerous skillset as a receiver. He is adept at shrinking through the hole and is very slippery.

He is the most valuable commodity on that offense.

I agree. Getting rid of Portis would be a bad move imo. When healthy he is a tremendous asset to have in the offense. As Campbell matures he and Portis could be a very solid one, two offensive punch. But I would also hold on to Ladell. He has obviously proven he can carry the load in this league and is the perfect power complement to Portis's speed. They could be a tandem much like McAllister/Bush with the proper direction.
