NBC 4.com, DC - 20 hours ago
ASHBURN, Va. -- It's been 12 months since Joe Gibbs fired himself from the offense so he could devote more time to his duties as team president.
Maybe it should have been the other way around.
Gibbs is in the Hall of Fame because he can coach, not because of any great front office moves he ever made. General managers Bobby Beathard and Charley Casserly and owner Jack Kent Cooke picked the players and crunched the numbers when the Washington Redskins were winning three Super Bowls in the 1980s and early 1990s.
Now, as the Redskins pick up the pieces from a 5-11 season, their greatest need isn't at cornerback, safety, defensive line, linebacker or receiver although they certainly could use an upgrade at all of those positions. Their real need is for an independent, authoritative voice in the front office, a general manager with power and the gumption to say no to a coach with Super Bowl rings and a free-spending owner.
