The Nationals extended the contract of 2B Ronnie Belliard into 2009 where he will be paid just under $2 million.

Still no guarantee. Maybe the teams who wanted him, wanted him to be locked up under contract for a few years. Who knows?

I don't think any team would have wanted him under such a long deal. When he was a free-agent in the off-season no team wanted him until right before camp I think.
