Lawrence: Torn Labrum

Brian Lawrence, a right-handed pitcher picked up from the Padres during the offseason, is done for the year with a torn right labrum. He went 7-15 with a 4.83 ERA in 33 starts for the Padres last season, and was expected to compete for a place in the rotation. I don't think his loss will cripple the Nationals, by any stretch of the imagination. But any injury that compromises the quality of your starting rotation is by definition a big one, so this will hurt them, don't you think?

it's the curse

Trust me, I'm a old school expos fan, and i'm sorry to say, the curse of the expos is alive and well in Washington. When a new player enters camp, someone who we think may make a solid contribution to the squad, they go down. If not in camp, then in the first weeks of the season.
A guy like Lawrence woulda been a good fit for that squad. It's a big loss in my books.

Re: it's the curse

Who winds up rounding out the rotation without him, Vlad?

Wash. rotation

The rotation should look as follows:

1- Livan Hernadez
2- Tony Armas
3- Pedro Astacio ( Frank Robinson loves the crafty old farts )
4- John Patterson
5- Ramon Ortiz

- personally, i'd like to see Andrew Good make the number 5 spot, and John Rauch always looked good as an Expo, but never really got a shot. Without a lefty starter, with 3 starters whose best pitch is their slow curveball, and no starter with any real heat, this rotation will take a serious beating all season long. At least Tony Armas we know will get injured in about... when's opening day ? Whenever that it. And Astacio's arm will likely just pop out of it's socket in the middle of his warm-ups. Remember , the curse.....

Re: Lawrence: Torn Labrum

According to Robinson, only Hernandez and Patterson are a lock for spots in the rotation. The candidates for the remaining 3 spots are:

Armas Jr.
Drese
Astacio
Ortiz
Rauch

Andrew Good has a very small chance of making the club. I think it would be great if Mike Hinckley could fill a starting rotation role. It's about time this team goes back to the old philosophy of grooming talent from within - not signing or attempting to sign the unproven or washed up players (Castilla, Astacio, Guzman, Sosa...).

The curse of the Exponals is not necessarily the injury bug - it is Bud Selig. MLB should be ashamed at the way this frachise has been treated for the past 5 years. The front office hasn't been able to do an effective job as a result of MLB's shenanigans...

I hope we can get an ownership group in place and start to turn this around...or I may have to become a Pirates fan....

We are family !!

( thats the 'ol Pitt motto from the Stargel days)

Dude ... i'm already a Pitt fan. I tried to care about Washington for a while, but it is futile. They are NOT the Expos. They lost Vlady , Cabrerra, Wilkerson, Vasquez, Barrett, even Endy Chavez !!! Aside from Brain Schneider, and Vidro, I could care less what happens to that team or any of it's players. Now excuse me, i'm going to go knock myself silly with my Shane Andrews bat. ( lousy Selig , Loria ... grumble ... grumble .... )
