To a man, the Vanderbilt Commodores agreed their 30-7 nonconference win Saturday night over visiting Eastern Michigan didn't qualify for any style points.

But they weren't looking for any, either.

On a night when starting quarterback Chris Nickson was intercepted four times and the team was penalized nine times for 87 yards — both season highs — the Commodores still managed to close out a season-opening homestand by improving to 3-1.

"I expect us to play a lot better offensively," senior tackle Chris Williams said following the win, Vanderbilt's second straight following a Southeastern Conference victory over Ole Miss two weeks ago. "But it's still a sign of a good team when you can play badly and still win.
