Bryant Hahnfeldt hadn't gone shopping for his mother's birthday last September.
But then, the Vanderbilt placekicker hadn't felt it necessary. And for good reason.

After all, as a seventh-grader at Montgomery Bell Academy, he had an interception return for a touchdown on mom Elizabeth's special day. And as a Commodore freshman, he booted a 37-yard field goal in an eventual 31-23 win over Ole Miss, a day after her birthday.

So Hahnfeldt was feeling pretty confident about his gift-giving abilities heading into Vanderbilt's Sept. 16 Southeastern Conference matchup with visiting Arkansas. But on that day, the Commodores lost 21-19 when his 48-yard potential game-winner was blown down by a stiff wind out of the south about 2 yards short of the crossbar.

"That was about all I'd asked for: hit a good one on my birthday," said Elizabeth, whose birthday this year comes a day after Vanderbilt takes on visiting Ole Miss.
