| Practice goes on despite light rain It wasn't wet enough to be of any significance to Vanderbilt's preparation, but the Commodores practiced through their first precipitation of the season Thursday afternoon. A drizzle hit the John Rich Practice Facility midway through the 90-minute workout, though the team was unfazed as it continued getting ready for Saturday's Southeastern Conference opener against visiting Alabama. "It didn't rain hard enough to give us any 'rain practice,'" Coach Bobby Johnson said. There's a 30 percent chance of rain Saturday. Vierling resumes work: Offensive lineman Bradley Vierling took part in Thursday's practice after a knee injury knocked him out of Saturday's win against Richmond. Johnson remains cautious regarding Vierling's availability for the Alabama game. "He's improved, but we don't know to what extent," Johnson said. "He could possibly be available if needed. "A Thursday practice and a Saturday game are different stories." Family reunion: Three buses from Brundidge, Ala. (population: 3,500), are Nashville-bound for Saturday's game, in support of Vanderbilt quarterback Chris Nickson and his cousin, Alabama tight end Nick Walker.
