Vanderbilt took little motivation from fifth-ranked Michigan's loss to Appalachian State into its own Saturday night contest with visiting Richmond.
The Commodores were sufficiently aware of their FCS (formerly I-AA) foe's capabilities from a 2005 matchup.

"We knew we couldn't come out half-stepping; we knew they were a good team," junior tailback Jeff Jennings said after Vanderbilt's 41-17 win.
Appalachian State, the two-time defending I-AA national champ, won at Michigan 34-32 in one of the day's early games. However, Vanderbilt Coach Bobby Johnson said he didn't think it necessary to bring any further attention to the danger of playing a lower-level opponent.
"They were all watching it anyway," said Johnson, whose Commodores defeated Richmond 37-13 two years ago.
