After battling unsuccessfully for the starting quarterback position at Vanderbilt a year ago, Mackenzi Adams and Richard Kovalcheck have had time to settle into their current roles as backups to Chris Nickson.

And while the time doesn't allow them to be any more satisfied with their situations, the two have been able to at least adjust to the idea that they aren't now — and likely aren't going to be — the primary Commodore quarterback.

"I'm not going to beat my head against the wall over something I can't do anything about," said Kovalcheck, who completed 10-of-14 passes for 63 yards in limited action as a junior last fall after starting parts of the previous two seasons at Arizona. "It's something I've accepted and I'm trying to make myself better (so that) in case the situation arises where the team needs me to get in there and make some plays, I'll be ready."

Vandy quarterbacks accept backup roles
