The source of inspiration and the driving force behind Karl Malone was always his mother.
"I'm here today because of God and Shirley Malone," Malone said. "She was my hero and will always be my hero."
Malone, who was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday night, said his late mother's sage advice kept him going during his long NBA career.
"She told me never ever to give up and always set the bar high," Malone said. "Always overachieve."
Malone was the last of eight Hall of Fame inductees to speak on Saturday night, which kept much of the capacity crowd around for nearly four hours. Known for his stamina as an athlete, Malone made the wait worthwhile as he spoke with passion and emotion.
"I want to tell young kids," Malone said. "If you have dream and a vision, don't ever let anyone tell you that you can't do it."
Karl Malone was a great player, but I absolutely cannot read about him discussing the importance of family without laughing.
