Dwayne Jarrett ruled ineligible

The Associated Press is reporting that USC wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett did in fact violate NCAA rules by not paying enough rent for the apartment he shared with Matt Leinart. He must replay several thousand dollars to Leinart's father and must apply for reinstatement with the NCAA before he can play this season. Reactions to this news?

Who does USC have left? I don't know anyone on that team anymore if Jarrett can't play. As for the penalty, I think it is rather ridiculous. The NCAA needs to lighten up a bit. I am no fan of USC, but I did grow up in the LA area and understand the cost of living there is extremely high. Then there is the fact that the USC campus is right in the middle of the worst ghetto of the LA area, very much unsafe to leave campus at night. Is it that unfair for his roommates dad to cover the bulk of the rent so they can live in a safe area off campus?

And its not like this was BECAUSE he was a football player that he was allowed to live there. It's because he was Matt Leinart's friend, as far as I can tell. Yes, they most likely met on the football field, but seriously - isn't that stretching the whole "don't use your athletic fame for profit" clause? Or is there something else here that I'm missing?

Since we are talking about the NCAA(No Clue About Athletics) they likely will penalize the kid. It really is too bad that the NCAA is so out of touch with the real world that they are not capable of using common sense.
