USC bans itself from postseason

USC has imposed sanctions on its men's basketball program for NCAA rules violations, including a ban on postseason competition at the end of this season, a reduction of scholarships and vacating all of its wins from 2007-08.

The university said the self-imposed sanctions resulted from an internal investigation that found NCAA rules violations related to O.J. Mayo, who played for the Trojans during the 2007-2008 season under former coach Tim Floyd. Mayo is now with the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies.

The sanctions are connected to Mayo's involvement with Rodney Guillory, who under NCAA rules became a USC booster due to his role in Mayo's recruitment.

Re: USC bans itself from postseason

Very good article Vince I just read today and great subject. Is this self discipline enough though? I think not only the PAC 10 but NCAA should get involved to investigate further. NCAA basketball is suffering enough from losing young players to the NBA every year and don't need teams trying to make up for this by cheating including boosters buying brand new cars bought for them using girlfriend's names. What does anybody else think?

Did you actually read the article kkfan? Hey, I could care less if a booster buys a car for a star player as long as all PAC 10 schools can buy cars for their star players as well. I guess you are not familiar with why NCAA schools and their boosters are not allowed to give presents, pay players, give star player's parents free mansions to live in and etc. etc etc. I am not sure you know how this works. Yes, it is court related and illegal in NCAA sports. Do some research.

Re: USC bans itself from postseason

and after reading it it still seems unimportant and not like it should be an issue so what if someone buys the guy stuff he's not there for an eductaion he is there for basketball and because of the NBA's got to play somewhere else first rule

The rule is in place to keep all schools on a level playing field when it comes to recruiting so in theory a St. Mary's has the same opportunity to land an O.J. Mayo just like a USC. That way one school does not get all the good players all the time. These rules came about years ago mainly because of football, something I learned from reading a book on Bear Bryant. That's the rules.

As far as what he is there for. A player goes to college for an Education not basketball. Although it does not always work that way, it is suppost to be that way.
