Vaive, Gilmour up for assistant coach to junior Leafs

Rick vaive and Doug Gilmour are both vying for the assistant marlies coach position that is up for grabs. The job became available when Paul maurice stepped up to coach the Leafs and took his assistant coach, Dallas Eakins, with him. head coach of the Marlies now is greg Gilbert.
Vaive was team captain in the early 80s and had three consecutive 50-goal seasons. he was coach of the Mississauga Icedogs but he was fired after the junior team had a 3-56-7 record. he's coached juniors in Saint john's and South carolina as well.
Gilmour is hugely loved here after his stint as captain and then his very short return in 2002. He's had no coaching experience at all- although he will coach his own 10 year old son's team this season in triple-A hockey.
Another consideration for the job is former Leaf defenceman Bob McGill. he's got some experience as well.
If dapperness is anything to do with the decision, vaive gets it, handsdown.

So they cite that Gilmour has no experience whatsoever and will not be a contender for the assis coach position - but more likely, as gm Ferguson says, he should have a "more visible post". So he'll be Like Sittler, who is something like an ambassador for the Leafs to the world. Oh it pays to be loved.
I say Vaive will get the assis coach position now. So what if he has a horrible record in the past? he won't be the coach of the Marlies- he'll be assisting the coach.

I like Vaive. I have a bunch of this hockey cards back in the day he was getting those 50 goal seasons...but a 3-56-7 record?...yikes...what makes him qualified?...still a bit more experience than Gilmour huh?

yeah - but then again, he's unproven. he could be a small rough diamond waiting to be made shiny.
I say give vaive the chance, though - if he sucked as a coach before, maybe he can learn some pointers this time round.

Except great players don't really make for great coaches...its like asking my brother (the really, really good looking one) how to pick up a girl...he will shrug his shoulders...never had to learn how...they picked him up...total lost cause...but...err..yeah, okay, go Gilmour...and Vaive...

-but weren't most of them professional hockey players at one point? some of them have to rise to the top.
Cherry? Carbonneau? MacTavish? Gretzky? lemaire? Sinden? Quinn?

Gretzky aside (and the jury is out on his coaching) the rest did not have the natural talent to be an All-time great...they were self made players and thus "learned" the game...you can't teach what Gretzky or Orr could do with a puck...either you have it or you don't...I like to think Gilmour had a lot of natural talent.
