Leafs have apparently given the Habs permission to talk to Sundin.
"We gave Montreal permission to talk to Mats," GM Cliff Fletcher told The Canadian Press on Friday. "We have no other comment at this time."

The thing is, Fletcher has been saying all along, We want Sundin here, so how maddening is it that he suddenly seems tight lipped and cold about the whole thing ie how much can we get for him?
Get rid of the deadwood i say (Wellwood, McCabe, raycroft) and keep the one decent player we have!!

they say Fletcher - having failed to persuade Sundin to stay - dealt him - can you deal someone when they aren't under contract? - to Montreal in the last 48 hrs on a conditional basis.

If Sundin goes, everything he said about I only want to play in Toronto was -well sounds dramatic but - a lie.

pretty surprising. I don't really know what to say. He's a life leaf I say. I don't think he could bring the same passion to Montreal. However Gilmour didn't let up much when he came to Montreal but he's a different player. I don't think it will happen. To weird.

He has spent his career in blue...Quebec and Toronto...I don't think he is going to look good in Red...he has to consider the uniform...

I think Gainey is doing the right thing for the habs. I mean Mats is world class and could be the missing piece on the club but imagine Koivu or Alfreddson on Toronto. The optics are horrible. Not to mention that the Leafs need Sundin. It would be an awfully bizarre hockey night in canada when the habs and leafs open up against eachother with Sundin in the red white and blue. It would be like Fidel Castro presiding over the US.
