Re: Habs can talk to Mats

hey Leafs also picked up Jimmy Hayes and Quebec Remparts winger Mikhail Stefanovich. form the toronto star:
Jimmy Hayes will have no shortage of NHL connections to tap into as he strives to make the Toronto Maple Leafs in future years. The winger from Dorchester, Mass., was taken 60th overall by the Maple Leafs at the NHL draft on Saturday. He had originally been ranked higher but slipped a little after an off year with Lincoln in the United States Hockey League.
Hayes' mother is cousins with St. Louis Blues forward Keith Tkachuk and former NHLer Tom Fitzgerald and he's spent time around both guys while growing up.
Fitzgerald actually sent the 18-year-old a text message of encouragement on Friday night after the first round passed without him being selected.
"His career starts today," said Fitzgerald, who now works for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
That's the same way Hayes was looking at the situation.
He had four goals and 11 points while playing 21 games in the low-scoring USHL this season. He'll play at Boston College in the fall and wants to prove that the Maple Leafs made the right choice in selecting him.
"I didn't have the season I wanted to have," said Hayes. ``Going into the season I was a big high prospect. I believe I'm still a high prospect.
"I'm glad I got to fall to the Toronto Maple Leafs."
Toronto used its third pick of the draft to grab another player who slipped. They selected Quebec Remparts winger Mikhail Stefanovich in the 98th position.
He was once projected to be a first-round pick but struggled with consistency at times this season. Even still, Leafs director of amateur scouting Dave Morrison couldn't let a player with as much talent as the Belarusian go any further.
"He's a shooter," said Morrison. "He's another guy we were thrilled to get. He had 36 goals last year."

He can't wear anything else - except maybe blue and yellow for you know sweden.

I had to say it!

I really can't see him in anything other than Blue and White.

I hate this about sports in this day and age, the way athletes don't spend a career with on team.

I hope things work out that he retires in Totonto.

Re: Habs can talk to Mats

Gainey is going to Sweden to see Mats on Wednesday.
Paper says Fletcher seems resigned to watching Mats leave.
Fletcher says he is just going to do his job.
Rumours have started that Higgins and a draft pick will be on the table for Mats, and maybe as well prospect Mikhail Grabovski.
I'm sorry, the deal must also include all first born children.

Be careful what you ask for.

You could end up with 35-40 kids asking you for money and the keys to your car!

Re: Habs can talk to Mats

news on the Sundin watch is, No news yet.
meaning, he's still mulling.
from the star:
"I have not decided what do to next season," Sundin told reporters in Sweden. "The first decision I have to make is whether I'm going to play next season.
"After that I'm going take on the question where to play."
The Rangers were trying to be in on this but were denied.
Gainey was supposed to go to Sweden but backed off - didn't want to pressure the big guy.

Re: Habs can talk to Mats

Sundin was supposed to talk to someone yesterday, at least through his agent, but he decided not to. Yawn.
The news I did learn was, Leafs had offered him a deal of $7 mill for one year. I've talked with hockey knowledgeable peers about this and after listening to their input, this is how I believe it went down - Leafs made an offer to Sundin and Sundin said he'd think about it. Leafs didn't necessarily like that, but they also wanted to get something for him if he decided not to come back here (before the deadline) so rather than just leave it all in Sundin's corner, Fletcher decided to talk to someone - and it turned out to be the Habs - re some form of compensation if Sundin should so decide to leave. It's called, covering all the bases - sorry to mix my sports.
Goalies being discussed now that raycroft is part of our glorious past - Cujo, Conkiln and Dubielewicz.

Re: Habs can talk to Mats

after yesterday's craziness, mats has sent out this statement via his agent:
“I would like to thank all the teams who have expressed such sincere interest in my services. The numerous options provided to me were impressive and I have no doubt that each one presented a unique opportunity for me to finish my career in a terrific hockey environment.
“I spent a great deal of time yesterday reflecting upon the teams who stepped forward and the opportunities that each provided. Unfortunately, I am simply not close to being ready to make a decision about resuming my career at this time.
“I wish all the teams the very best and thank them for their interest.”

Re: Habs can talk to Mats

I have this feeling that, after all this, he will retire.
And then he'll only wear blue and yellow from then on.
