Maurice FIRED

Finally. A decision.
Maurice had a 76-66-22 record during his two seasons behind the Toronto bench.
Leafs are GM-less and Coach-less. Sundin just announced his engagement to a Swedish girl which does not bode well - ie he's ready to settle down which means retire.
talk about starting from scratch.
Assistant coach Randy Ladouceur was also fired - no word yet on the fate of Maurice’s other assistants, Keith Acton and Dallas Eakins.
maurice on his firing:
“Things that went well will be talked about occasionally and the things that didn’t go well will be talked about repeatedly, and then a new guy will come in and take a look at the hockey club that is and make a decision on where he thinks we should go.”
interesting note:
Maurice’s overall NHL record with Toronto and Hartford/Carolina is 344-373-121. He guided Carolina to the Stanley Cup final in 2002, knocking off the Quinn-led Leafs in the Eastern Conference final. The Hurricanes lost the final in five games to a very strong Detroit club.
Come on - they had to fire him - this was written on the wind.

Re: Maurice FIRED

So are we to expect a full rebuilding process to get underway in Maple Leafs country?

Geez, Oli, let the Leafs fans have their moment of hope! Sometimes thats all we can cling to as sports fans is hope, and now you want to go and rain on their parade. I bet you like kicking puppies too, ya big meanie! (Just kidding, of course!)

Re: Maurice FIRED

who's kidding? Thanks for the horrifyingly icky negativity. Did you play the storm cloud in your grade three play? Sure it could go downhill and I could get hit by a bus tomorrow. So should I order my black suit now or think, Maybe things will go well instead?
I'll paint my sunglasses rosy, thanks.

Indeed. Rosey could very well work.

Look what happened with Philly this year. I never expected this.

Keep up that postive attitude! Look how silly the Flyers made this fan look that was ready to give up on them!

Plus instead of kicking puppies, I kick annoying Leaf fans!
(Kidding, of course. I kick Ottawa fans.)

Re: Maurice FIRED

And all this kicking coming from a very lonely, hockeyless New York state. Anyway, a very informed leaf fan at my place of work suggested that the Leafs have a GM in mind and this nameless GM wanted a clean slate when he arrived therefore handing over the firing duties to Cliff Fletcher. It seems logical. I mean who would want their first task to be firing the coach. Anyway, this is from a column he read, no idea of the source.

Re: Maurice FIRED

paper today has some suggestions for the new open coaching spot (believe me, this was front page news in Toronto):
Joel Quenneville (their odds are 3-1)
Marc Crawford (7-2)
Ron Wilson (7-2)
Bob Hartley(6-1)
Pat Quinn (25-1)
Quenneville used to play for the leafs - ditto Ron Wilson - and was an assistant coach in our system.
Crawford has worked well under Fletcher before-which matters only if Fletcher stays.
Quinn has coached 574 Leafs games- the most since 1967 of any coach - but he also started the downfall that first season not getting into the playoffs.
I say, no to Crawford - that was a mess when he left vancouver, plus there's the shroud of him being part of the bertuzzi revenge on Steve Moore - plus we have Steve's brother Dominick playing for the Leafs - how uncomfy would that be?
Hartley? i don't know - disastrous season in Atlanta.
I like the idea of Quenneville - he's a no-s**t taker kind of guy, like Quinn. Plus he's a great coach.
GM names are also being floated around, like Nonis (Leafs have asked permission to speak to him - isn't it like the olden days where men asked permission from the woman's father if they could marry her?), also a Vancouver reject.

Making fun of my state are we? Last time I checked Montreal lost to Philly and almost lost to Boston.

Re: Maurice FIRED

now now boys.
and Oli - there's no such thing as 'almost lost' - you win or you lose. Montreal won, Boston lost.

If Boston was close to winning, Montreal almost lost. You hear people say, "We almost lost!".
