higher ticket prices, fewer games available

A few years back, maple leaf sports gave LeafsTV a few games to broadcast. So if you don't have digital tv, you can't watch these games.
I don't have digital tv. For the most part, i hate it, of course - they most often broadcast western conf teams, so I never get a chance to see the Leafs play Columbus or nashville - it's never a Boston game, who we play a zillion times a season.
Well, now, after the announcement that they are raising ticket prices to go see a game, they are also shifting the number of games broadcast on leafsTV from 12 to 20.
I'm furious.
because it is also now more expensive to get digital tv, if i was to choose - $99 up front to watch those 20 games. Apparently what the broadcasters pay to play the games is huge. TSN and Rogers Sportsnet pay about $700,000 a game, which increased from $450,000 from the last signed deal.
The $$$ Maple Leaf Sports makes (millions upon millions upon millions) is vomit-inducing and Damien Cox, the columnist in The Star says it best:
"Who knew four decades of losing could be so extremely profitable?"
I'm going to radio more next season and I'm proud of it. No way i'm shelling out to digital tv - that's like giving in. What's so great about moving pictures, anyway?

Cool Re: higher ticket prices, fewer games available

I don't understand. Why do you need a digital TV to watch the games on Leafs TV?

A rebel with a cause huh?...Do you have a pick sign yet?...and a sign needs a catchy phrase...and hey, if you have socialized medicine up there, can't you socialize "hockey on TV?"...I mean why must the people do without pictures?...Sundin just doesn't sound as cute on the radio ya know...

Re: higher ticket prices, fewer games available

It's just a more expensive cable package is all, pundit. Up into the 500 channels. It's too dear for me - but more to the point - tv sucks whether you have 5 or 500 channels - I'd get it only for LeafsTV. Worth it? I feel like I've been manipulated, or worse.
Gotham - good point - our medicine AND our hockey needs to be available to ALL- regardless of rich or poor.
No, Sundin will have to be in my head while i listen - or I put a picture of them all around the room, turn where I need to go when the play is around that player.
I need to make room for Gill.
I'll punch a bunch of holes in raycroft, too - just to make it real.

I see a political campaign brewing...go get'em...

And yeah, a bit too realistic with the whole "hole in Raycraft bit"...but you got to make due...

So Blue, to get Leafs games, how much do you have to pay?

Re: higher ticket prices, fewer games available

quoted from the Star:
The price for mediocrity has risen for subscribers, up $10.48 per ticket to a high of $182 for those in platinum and gold seats, while those in the lowest-priced section, purple, will now pay $37 instead of $34.70.
Platinum and Gold (sides): $182 for next season; $171.52 this past year
Platinum and gold (ends): $171 for next season; $160.62 this past season
Reds: $132 - $123.93
Blue/green: $72 - $67.42
Purple: $37 - 34.70

But the thing is, here tickets go faster than free beers. So maybe $37 sounds manageable, you you have to work hard just to get a crummy game. And then you have crummy seats.
