Blue Jays vs Red Sox - Battle for 2nd Place

The Blue Jays, fresh off a sweep at the hands of the Cleveland Indians, are - in the words of the AP - "limping into Fenway Park" for a series against the Boston Red Sox "with second place in the American League East (☻☻☻☻y prize that it is) on the line?" Neither team has been overly impressive lately. How do you guys see this series going?

Re: Blue Jays vs Red Sox - Battle for 2nd Place

Both teams are limping, but the Blue Jays have owned the Sox this year.

Game 1: Roy Halladay agaisnt David Wells

Not so great for Boston.

Game 2: Ted Lilly against Kyle Snyder

Lilly has a 3.88 career ERA against Boston, but if you take away Ortiz, Pena, and Manny from the lineup, that ERA will go down.

Game 3: AJ Burnett against ?

The BoSox don't even know who will be pitching Saturday's game.

I don't think this will be a great series for Boston....

Who pitches in place of Wells if he's traded today?

Re: Blue Jays vs Red Sox - Battle for 2nd Place

This bunch of clowns will never win anything. Alex Rios made like Jose Canseco Thursday night, only he threw the ball into the stands rather than let it bounce off of his head. How in the world can that be ruled a home run?
Then the Blue Jays can't get to Kyle Snyder of all people. No wonder Ted Lilly wants out of Toronto. Halladay shoudn't be too far behind him if he gets the chance.

The Blue Jays are playing without spirit... Even the KC Royals are playing better baseball ( swept Boston, took 2 of 3 from Minnesota, and just beat Chicago).... The Jays need a re-organization. Fire Gibbons and other front office guys.

Re: Blue Jays vs Red Sox - Battle for 2nd Place

The only reason that the Blue Jays have lost their motivation to make the Playoffs this year is because their chances are so slim. If you know that you are probably not going to make the Playoffs, why try? Personally, I would play my best until the last game of the season is over. Keep your head in the game!

As much as we want to, MVB, we cannot always blame the Front Office.

Re: Blue Jays vs Red Sox - Battle for 2nd Place

After a brief layoff, the Battle for 2nd place in the AL East has resumed, with Toronto winning the latest round.

Burnett and Blue Jays Hold Off Red Sox
Associated Press

After years of finishing in third, the Toronto Blue Jays would love to finish ahead of Boston in second place in the AL East.

Lyle Overbay and Troy Glaus hit consecutive homers, and A.J. Burnett pitched seven strong innings to lead the Blue Jays to a 5-3 victory over the Red Sox on Saturday.

Boston was eliminated from playoff contention when Minnesota beat Baltimore. It's the first time Red Sox have missed the playoffs since 2002.

Toronto has finished third — behind New York and Boston — in seven of the past eight seasons.

"You know you don't have anything else to play for so you might as well play for that," Overbay said. "Those guys have been in the top two for 50 years or so. It would be a step in the right direction for us."
The Blue Jays are still 1.5 games behind the second-place Red Sox. Can they close the gap?

Re: Blue Jays vs Red Sox - Battle for 2nd Place

Boston's second place lead on the Jays is down to half a game after Toronto's 13-4 thrashing of the Sox. During the game, Vernon Wells collected his 500th RBI and Troy Glaus drove in his 100th run of the season, something he hadn't done since 2002. Boston is falling fast, and it sure looks like Toronto's fixin' to finish in 2nd place this season.

Re: Blue Jays vs Red Sox - Battle for 2nd Place

And the Blue Jays are now officially in second place in the AL East.

Blue Jays grab second place in home finale with 5-0 win over Red Sox
Canadian Press

TORONTO (CP) - The Toronto Blue Jays moved into second place in the American League East standings Monday night for the first time since May 1 - and they have six games left to stay there.

More importantly, Vernon Wells left town for the winter with a strong message about his desire to stay with the club.

It all made for an eventful home finale, in which the Blue Jays rode eight innings of two-hit ball from rookie Shaun Marcum and a three-run homer from Alex Rios to a 5-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox.

The victory gave the Blue Jays (83-73) three of four in the series and pushed them a half-game ahead of the Red Sox (83-74) as they try to finish better than third for the first time since 1993.

"Obviously second place is better than third place but it's still not where we want to be," said Wells. "I guess it's a good consolation prize."

Re: Blue Jays vs Red Sox - Battle for 2nd Place

Boston's outfield is hilarious to watch. Youkalis and Willy Mo Pena misplayed five balls between them, and that was just one game. Lots of changes coming over the winter in beantown.

Re: Blue Jays vs Red Sox - Battle for 2nd Place

Do you think they will hold onto David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez over the off-season, legend?

Manny wants out of beantown. Why? No excuse, just Manny being Manny.

Re: Blue Jays vs Red Sox - Battle for 2nd Place

Ortiz is untouchable but they would love to unload Manny, maybe to the Angels from what I am hearing. The problem there is you could never get a hiiter as good as he is in return, so you would need to get some very good pitching back for him, and maybe a position player as well.

You always hear that Manny is going to the Angels. What's new?

When I see him in Anahiem, I'll believe it.

San Jose Mercury News, USA - 8 hours ago
The Blue Jays (83-74) had won eight of 11, improving their hopes of finishing higher than third in the AL East for the first time since winning the World Series in 1992-93.

With Toronto's loss and Boston's win, the Red Sox moved a half-game ahead of the Blue Jays for second in the division.

"We've got a battle for the next five days with Boston," Toronto manager John Gibbons said. "Being in second place was short-lived, obviously, and we hated to relinquish that. Boston's tough at home and playing two teams they've beaten up this year, but we've got five days to get it back from them."
