John Gibbons Ted Lilly fight

Wow, have you all heard about this one? Blue Jays manager John Gibbons apparently got into some kind of altercation with pitcher Ted Lilly today. According to the AP, "When Lilly left the mound for the locker room, Gibbons followed him. A team trainer and a number of players then ran down the stairs of the tunnel leading to the clubhouse... Cameramen near the dugout saw Gibbons push Lilly first. A television camera later showed Gibbons with a bloody nose."

Wow, Hillenbrand was right - this is a sinking ship? How long until Gibbons gets axed?

Re: John Gibbons Ted Lilly fight

If I'm the GM, I have to think about firing the manager. These situations don't just show up without cause. But Lilly hitting the manager, boy oh boy lol. Unless Gibbons physically attacked him, there's no reason to give your manager a bloody nose.

Cool Re: John Gibbons Ted Lilly fight

According to ESPN, no punches were thrown and Lily admitted to saying something he shouldn't have. According to Gibbons everything is settled.

My take: Gibbons has to go. This is the 2nd guy he's almost come to blows with. If it happens once, okay. Twice - he shouldn't be managing. If I were the Jays I would seriously look at Lee Mazzili. He's laid back. He got screwed in Baltimore and has been around the Yankees forever. He definitely knows his baseball.

If no punches were thrown, how in the world did Gibbons' nose get bloodied?

Re: John Gibbons Ted Lilly fight

In a postgame interview, Lily said no punches were thrown and that he couldn't see how Gibbons possibly came out with a bloody nose.

But, man, Gibbons can't keep the peace on that team... I guess since the Jays don't have any real rivals, they decided to brawl with fellow teammates.

I remember Billy Martin shoving Mr. October in the dugout in 1977 for not hustling in RF...but since they won that year, no one screamed for his scalp...

Re: John Gibbons Ted Lilly fight

Seems like maybe Lilly is the one who is going to pay for this. Talk is he could be put up on irrevocable waivers and claimed, or be traded by the end of August. Lilly seems embarrassed now. Gibbons had to pry the ball from his hand.
gm Ricciardi is standing by Gibbons, and at the same time, Gibbons has said, lilly will play on Sunday.
But there is also talk that, come season's end, Gibbons will be dumped.
As is normal in Toronto, it's all chatter.
One fun incident cited is back in 92 when Cito gaston went out to tell dave wells to leave the mound, and wells threw the ball down the left field line before cito could get to him.
"If you can't get the ball, I get to stay out there indefinitely...."
Apparently, Cito has the memory of an elephant and they say left Wells out on the mound during a game later for 4 1/2 innings and 13 runs to make him pay.
I was a huge fan of Cito - I liked the quiet deeply burning intensity. this Gibbons - he's like the Tasmanian Devil - gone mad. Keep your friggin cool while all those around you go mad, and you look much better.

And I say this calls for a loser leaves town Wrestling Cage Match... I personally would keep them both... I rather have a player you got to come down then one you got to get up for a game...or who wants off the mound.

Personally, I would get rid of Gibbons. You just can't have 2 physical altercations with your players. The manager should be the calming influence - not the loosest gun on the team. Maybe Hillenbrand was on to something...But JP Riccardi has already fired 2 managers in 5 years. If I were him, I would go for a calm steady influence for next year. This Toronto team has a ton of talent. Lee Mazilli is the guy they should go for.

Lee Mazzilli...once the best player on some very forgetable Mets team...I like him...good guy, should get a break.

Maz got his break-he got out of Baltimore. An Oakland TV crew close to the action are the ones that started the bloody nose rumor.
