Jays part ways with Phillips

With an eye increasingly on the future, the Blue Jays released 30-year-old backup catcher Jason Phillips following last night's 4-2 loss to Seattle.
In Phillips' place for today's game will be Curtis Thigpen, a young catcher who hit .270 over 37 at-bats prior to the all-star break, mostly as a first baseman. Thigpen had been sent back down to Triple-A Syracuse July 8 just before starting first baseman Lyle Overbay returned from the DL.
Hitting .208 with 10 RBIs for 235 at-bats and making $500,000 (U.S.) this season, Phillips politely declined comment on the matter in a post-game Jays clubhouse already glum as a result of increasingly unrealistic playoff chances.
"We just want to see what we've got (in Thigpen)," said manager John Gibbons, who like Phillips came up through the Mets system and managed him at Double-A Norfolk in 2001.
"That's baseball forever," said Gibbons. "It's never easy telling guys that, never easy hearing it.''

Cool Re: Jays part ways with Phillips

As Hyman Roth said in Godfather II, Phillips is "small potatoes."
