It's becoming more and more apparent that the Toronto Blue Jays should, and probably will, wind up firing manager John Gibbons. The Blue Jays have spent a fair share of money trying to improve over the past few years, but at this point in the season, they're 13-21 and riding a nine game losing streak. Sure, you could question the talent level of the signing's they've made, that they've overpaid for those players, and that they're facing a good deal of injuries. But in the end, it all comes down to wins and losses, and this Toronto team is underachieving. How long until Gibbons gets the axe?

I'm not against firing Gibbons. But what about JP Riccardi? He put this team together. But let's be fair, also. The Jays have been decimated by injury including just losing BJ Ryan for the season.

Toronto finally won a game again last night, beating the Devil Rays 5-1. Afterwards, Gibbons told reporters that the win "took a load off... It felt like we won the World Series." Can't imagine that this does much to ultimately save his job, though... you can't win one out of every 10 games and hope to stay employed in the Major Leagues.

Yesterday the questions revolved around manager John Gibbons' use of light-hitting John McDonald to pinch-hit for Jason Phillips leading off the bottom of the eighth inning, trailing the D-Rays by a run.

Wherefore Alex Rios? The five-tool Rios had, unusually, been given the start off in right field against the ash- and maple-challenged Rays starter Jae (say it ain't) Seo, the 29-year-old Korean, leading the majors in runs allowed and fourth in the AL in hits. Opponents were batting .386 against Seo.

So, why rest Rios, who had seven hits in five games of the homestand? The better question might be, why even pinch-hit with McDonald, who had one hit in his previous 25 at-bats.

Others available on the bench included lefty swinger Jason Smith, although he only has three hits in his last 26 at-bats.

"I've got my reasons," Gibbons said, cryptically when asked about McDonald. "You don't need to know them."
