Defense dominates in Longhorns' orange-white football scrimmage

Sunday, March 30, 2008

New defensive coordinator Will Muschamp was charged with building a better pass rush this spring, as the Longhorns looked to fix what ailed the pass defense the past two years. The Longhorns generated only 29 sacks in 2007, with four of those in a Holiday Bowl victory.

Officially, the "Pride" beat the "Tradition" 14-10 in a new spring-scrimmage format installed for Saturday's game. The "Pride" squad featured the Longhorns' first-team offense and second-team defense along with some of the third-stringers.
The "Tradition" team was represented by the Texas first-team defense and its second-string offense. The first teams only scrimmaged against each other, a change from years past, so that coaches could put the game in better context when evaluating performances.

Because the scrimmage was televised regionally and open to the public, Brown intentionally kept the offensive and defensive schemes on the bland side. For that reason, it was difficult to tell specifically what Muschamp had added to the mix, other than a heightened intensity, since he was hired from Auburn in early January.

"I want us to be the most over-achieving defense in the country," he said. "We have to play hard, play fast and play physical."
