Welcome to Defensive Back University — a very good place for a secondary education.
Since 2002, eightUT defensive backs have cashed an NFL paycheck. Five of them — Jammer, Vasher, Huff, Ross and Michael Griffin — were first-round picks. In Huff and Ross, the Longhorns have produced each of the past two Thorpe Award winners. "You see those guys in the NFL, you're so happy for them," says junior Ryan Palmer, now in line for a starting cornerback job. "When you finally get your chance, you want to make them proud." If history is a guide, there is talent to be mined there.
In each of Mack Brown's nine seasons as head coach, the Longhorns have started at least one defensive back who went on to play in the NFL. The 2005 secondary, which helped the Longhorns win a national championship, produced five NFL players. Unproven as they are, members of the Longhorns' new secondary aren't shy about upholding the legacy of the All-Americans who came before them. They are confident they have the talent to join the club.
"You'll see on Saturdays," UT cornerback Brandon Foster says.
Or, if the past is any indication, on Sundays.
