Don’t look back, Longhorns. Someone’s gaining on you.
Texas captured its seventh straight Tribune-Herald Big 12 all-sports championship in 2007, winning four conference titles and finishing in the top three in 10 other sports.
But after lapping the field by an average of 48 points since 2001 in the Trib’s annual measure of overall sports success, the Longhorns this spring had to finish strong to hold off Texas A&M, 171.5-165, in the closest race ever.
The Aggies captured a Big 12-best six conference crowns to repeat their women’s championship with 99 points. But that wasn’t enough to make up the stagger on the Horns, who scored 93.5 points to run away with the men’s title for the seventh consecutive year.
