Four years ago, freshman Carmelo Anthony helped lead Syracuse to the national championship. This year, Texas hopes a trio of freshmen led by Big 12 player of the year Kevin Durant can help it do the same.

With Durant set to make his NCAA tournament debut - and possibly his last appearance in a college uniform - the fourth-seeded Longhorns meet No. 13 seed New Mexico State on Friday in the first round of the East Regional in Spokane, Wash.

Durant, a 6-foot-9 forward, put together one of the most dominant freshman seasons ever, finishing fourth in the nation with 25.6 points per game and third with 11.3 rebounds. His 20 double-doubles tied him with Nevada's Nick Fazekas for the Division I lead.

SPOKANE, WASH. — Like those safety videos shown to teenagers in driver's education class, the Texas Longhorns' close call in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament can be used for instructional purposes.

Lesson One: Make 25 of 26 free throws and you'll always have a chance to win.

Lesson Two: A little rebounding and defense can go a long way.

Lesson Three: Don't panic.

The fourth-seeded Longhorns survived some tense moments late in the second half Friday, pulling away in the final minutes to fend off 13th-seeded New Mexico State 79-67 in the first round of the East Regional at Spokane Arena.

Texas (25-9) will play Southern California at 4:20 p.m. Sunday.
