Post Alamo Bowl: Longhorns vs. Hawkeyes

The Texas Longhorns will play the Iowa Hawkeyes in the Alamo Bowl this season. Here's a preview.

Longhorns coming to Alamo Bowl
San Antonio Express, TX - Dec 3, 2006

The Texas Longhorns' slide from their 2005 national championship perch has resulted in a happy landing for the Alamo Bowl, which just two weeks ago looked like it would be saddled with a mediocre matchup for its Dec. 30 game.

The Express-News learned on Sunday that UT has accepted an invitation to play in the Alamo Bowl for the first time in the bowl’s 14-year history. The Longhorns will battle Big Ten member Iowa, whose invitation was announced two weeks ago.

UT landed in the Alamo Bowl's lap, it was learned, when the Gator Bowl selected West Virginia as one of its two competing teams. West Virginia earned the Gator Bowl nod by beating Rutgers in triple overtime on Saturday night. In choosing West Virginia, the Gator Bowl passed up its chance to take a highly ranked Big 12 team. Had West Virginia lost, the Gator would likely have taken UT.

So who do you guys think will win this game - Texas or Iowa? Post your predictions here!

As long as Colt McCoy is back to 100%, I'm going to have to say Texas. I know that's alot of faith to put in one guy, and many might say he's not the one, but the loss to KSU is evidence that he is. And whether he was 100% or not against Texas A&M, or he just hit a wall, McCoy has shown time after time that he is the leader of that team. And a healthy McCoy equals Texas wins!

Well, they say that he is recovering at a fast pace. He's young, and hasn't had to take too many hard shots, thanks to that protective off. line, so I'm sure he'll be back to 100% by the 30th.

Re: Alamo Bowl: Longhorns vs. Hawkeyes

Hi Jake, welcome to GoTeamsGo

Should be a great Alamo Bowl matchup. If Colt's 100%, I think the Horns win this by 10 points. But if he's not full speed, Hawkeyes may be able to take it.

Anybody want to throw out a prediction on the score?

I'm waiting to hear what McCoy's status for the game is. It's been awful quiet on that front...

McCoy breaks the freshman record for TD passes and goes for over 300 yards in the air as Texas holds off Iowa, 26-24, in the Alamo Bowl. This marks the sixth straight season the Longhorns won at least 10 games, and they should only get better next season, don't you think?

Re: Alamo Bowl: Longhorns vs. Hawkeyes

They will be better next season. Sure they're losing several good starters, two of which are All-Americans, but their still is alot of talent coming back next year. Limas Sweed and the rest of the wide recieving corp will be back. Jammal Charles will probably go over 1000 yds again like he did his freshman year. And of course Colt McCoy, who not only tied the record for most passing touchdowns in a season by a freshman, but was also a Davey O'Brian finalist and an All-American Honroable Mention, will still be there lobbing passes at them. Frank Okam, probably the best pass rusher in the nation is coming back. The list goes on and it's not really going to be a re-building year. Plus the guys that were scout team or back up this year, are very good players too.

Welcome to GoTeamsGo, Jake. Great analysis, and definitely goes to show that the Longhorns should be loaded in '07, especially on offense. Not sure I'd agree with Okam being the best pass rusher in the nation, but he is talented. With the core of McCoys, Sweed and Charles, though, I definitely think a Big 12 title and a BCS bowl bid are reasonable goals. Replacing Chizik might be their biggest task in the offseason, don't you think?

Yes, Chizik will be hard to replace. If I was a defensive coordinator though I would jump at the chance to be at UT. Any word on finding a repacement?
