San Jose Mercury News, USA - 10 hours ago
PHOENIX - Along the way, Texas' young basketball team will be exposed to many things for the first time.
On Saturday in an NCAA Tournament-type atmosphere at the US Airways Center in the Basketball Hall of Fame Challenge, No. 22 Gonzaga gave the freshman-dominated Longhorns their first lesson in humility during an 87-77 victory that wasn't as close as the score indicated.
The Bulldogs repeatedly cut up Texas' attempts to play transition defense by making the extra pass to get their shooters open, but the Longhorns also contributed to their own downfall.
"The most disappointing thing today is that we had a couple of days to prepare for them and we didn't come out and show what we could do," said sophomore guard A.J. Abrams, who played his least effective game of the season.
"We didn't come out and do what we said we were going to do."
