What you might not know is Donald Young could be the next great American tennis player. The next great African-American tennis player, too. The home-schooled Atlanta teenager who earned his high school diploma in November has been wearing those expectations for more than three years. At 15, he became the youngest boy in history ranked No. 1 in the world. That same year, he was the youngest to win the Australian Open junior title. Two weeks ago, he won the boys championship at Wimbledon, joining greats such as Roger Federer, Stefan Edberg and Bjorn Borg, whose wins on the All-England grass courts were precursors to stellar careers. On the eve of his 18th birthday — which is today — Young's evolving tennis career is about to take its biggest leap. His metamorphosis from teenage prodigy to full-fledged pro will be nearly complete.
