Roger Federer won his 500th career tennis match earlier today at the Monte Carlo Masters. He beat David Ferrer 6-4, 6-0 to advance to the semifinals. "I am very happy to have done it here," Federer told the AP after the match. "That is a lot of games. I'm glad they are victories."

I agree with that. He's certainly one of the the best. I know most people will say there's a lack of competition, but maybe it's not that everyone else is subpar. Maybe Federer's so good he just makes them look that way. Definitely one of the most dominant athletes in sports today, right up there with Tiger and Michael Phelps.

The problem though is he has no legit competition...Borg, Mac, Conners, Lendle, Becker etc came along when they had epic battles with peers...Federer...though probably their equal, is having a tough time making the claim without a top rival...

See, I knew someone would play the lack of competition card. But Goth... is it that there's no one good playing in his era? Or is Federer just so good he smokes guys who would compete with Borg, Mac, Conners, et. al. in their primes?

There is little out there...you got Rafael Nadal and sometimes Roddrick and little else...its dead...he might be that good...but how are we to know?

I think he may be that good, but Goth is right about the lack of competition. If there was another player on his level, somebody would rise to challenge him at least once off the clay courts.
