Cool Tennis: Johnny McEnroe Comeback

March 8, 2006 (AP)
John McEnroe would love to play doubles at Wimbledon or the U.S. Open again and even thinks he'd have a shot at winning another major title.
What he's not so sure about: Would playing in one of those Grand Slam tournaments fit into his busy TV schedule?
If he did play doubles at Flushing Meadows or the All England Club, McEnroe said, "I think I could win it -- and I could also lose in the first round."
He won seven singles and nine doubles championships at Grand Slams before retiring in 1992.
The 47-year-old McEnroe is weighing offers to appear in ATP doubles tournaments after making a successful return to the tour last month by teaming with Jonas Bjorkman to win the title at the SAP Open in San Jose.
McEnroe said Wednesday he hasn't decided where -- or even whether -- he'll sign up for another ATP event.
"I don't have any definite plans," he said. "There's a bit of, obviously, an itch. I felt I could do it. It's nice when you actually do do it. ... The temptation is to want to go to a big event -- the U.S. Open or Wimbledon."

Well this seemed interesting...Johnny Mc is on the comeback...at 47 he is making a comeback...What d oyou think?...Good for Tennis, not good for tennis?...Probably trying to set up his career to sell the George Foreman grill?...thoughts?

Re: Tennis: Johnny McEnroe Comeback

I have little doubt that McEnroe could make a minor comeback for a gig at Wimbledon or the Open, and wouldn't mind seeing him make the attempt either. While he'd get taken apart in a singles matchup, Johnny Mac is one of the Top 5 doubles players of all time, and even at his advanced age, doubles is still about touch and reflex, which McEnroe probably still has. Martina came back and won a title, and she's like 89, so I'd love to see McEnroe do it. My only regret is that it would take him away from his broadcasting duties, as I think he's one of the most underated commentators, in any sport, in my opinion.

"Colorful" guys often make the best commentator.

Hmm... wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that tennis is talking about using instant replay in the near future? Think ol' Johnny Mac wouldn't just LOVE to have video evidence to back up one of his timeless rants!

My guess is, he is no Martina. i like his commentary - I think he should stick to that. It seems like the pull of the sport is very difficult for an athlete to resist - so hard to call it quits completely.

Now, now bluenandwhite girl, I'm starting to think you got it in for all "old athletes"...cut the old boy a break, he will not be skating for the Leafs...that should make you happy...

I gotta admit, he never was a favourite of mine. I find him far easier to take, and much more interesting, when he's talking about tennis. It's not an old guy thing. Honest.
Maybe if Borg came back, I'd be there. Just seems, Martina was pumped. it was never a surprise when she would win.

Re: Tennis: Johnny McEnroe Comeback

Martina wants the Wimbledon record all to herself, that's why she has kept coming back. She's tied with Billie Jean King with a record 20 Wimbledon titles (singles and doubles), and has kept coming back and coming back until she breaks the tie. At some point I'll suspect she'll do it, she's been close a couple of times. I don't mind seeing her play, she still has great touch around the net.

In McEnroe's own words:

"You can't be serious!"
