PASADENA, Calif. — Everything came up roses for UCLA. Tennessee did nothing but wilt.
The Bruins stunned No. 18 UT with a recharged offense in the second half and strutted out of the Rose Bowl with a 27-24 overtime victory in front of a raucous crowd of 68,546. It is the second consecutive season the Volunteers opened the season on the West Coast and headed home with a loss. Last year, UT lost 45-31 at Cal.“We made enough mistakes tonight to lose three, four or five ballgames, whether it be offensively, defensively or in the kicking game,” UT Coach Phillip Fulmer said. “You can pick and choose any one of those. Those are things that are fixable.”
UCLA had the ball first in overtime, but had to settle for a 42-yard field goal and a 27-24 lead. UT then had to score a touchdown to win the game, but couldn’t even manage a field goal for the tie. A 34-yard attempt by Daniel Lincoln was pulled left, ending the game and prompting a powder-blue celebration at midfield.
